Hi Everyone,
As I have mentioned, I will share some material (and tips) for those interested in getting an MBA from BYU (or any other B-School in the US for that matter).
I will send several emails. Because I do not get paid to do this, I won't be able to write a very long and extensive email with a list of things, so instead, I will send a number of emails, with topics such as TOEFL, GMAT, Application process, Cost, Living in the US, my Experience, etc.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out (in English, Portuguese or Spanish).
As my first email, I will briefly write about the importance of English proficiency and the TOEFL (English Test).
If you don't have very good English (meaning you can understand financial reports, write business proposals, read the newspaper, host professional presentations, speak naturally including being active in discussions sharing your opinion and asking questions) this is where you should start.
Your English level will have a huge impact on your GMAT Score and your ability to successfully finish the MBA Program.
I Have good English but I would like to improve it? How can I get to the next level?
There is a lot you can do to improve your English, the best you can do is to practice.
But I Don't know anyone who speaks English.
This is not a problem, you can start by listening General Conference talks in English (or in your language) and then, try telling someone what you just heard (in English). Practice conversations, think about the many situations of find yourself in everyday and how you'd handle them in English? For example, try to register a complaint in English, tell a story or negotiate something, try describing places, people and events.
You can always enroll in ESL (English as second language) classes as well.
Another option is to come to the US and enroll in English classes here. This is something I would totally recommend. There are great schools here and, although expensive, it is worth the investment. If you are interested in coming to the US to study English, write me an email and I will give you detail about the schools here, application process, VISA, Cost, etc.
If you are confident about your English, make sure to download and review some TOEFL material. The TOEFL is tailored towards an academic setting so it is always good to review the material before taking the test.
Remember, your goals is to score 100 (bare Minimum to be accepted by BYU is 94), there is plenty TOEFL material (FREE) available online.
Best Regards,
Daniel Soares
